3 Hints For Leaders To Avoid Employee Turnover
New rules of attraction, retention, and attrition
What is the relationship between the emotional intelligence of the leader and employee turnover?
Employees who report having a leader with low emotional intelligence are 4 times more likely to leave the company within one year.
This is a lot.
The whole leader-employee relationship is based in fact on the emotional intelligence of both parties. Each of them shares a 50% participation in creating a healthy work relationship and each party is responsible 100% for their feelings, thoughts, and actions. When this is not balanced, sometimes the relationship suffers. In some cases, it suffers so much that one of the parties decides to leave the company. In many cases, this is the employee.
What are 3 hints for leaders to avoid employee turnover?
Take care of individual needs: Every person is unique. A leader who knows the employee's psychological needs can retain that employee longer. Ask each person what they need, follow up with them on a regular base, and see which status they have.
Take and give expectations regularly: The number one question that every employee is asking is “Do I know what is expected of me at work?”. Every person needs to know if they are going in the right direction, and what their leader expects from them and have regular conversations about it. Encourage each employee to set up recurrent feedback sessions and ask for your feedback.
Minimize threat response in feedback conversations: When you have a feedback conversation, make sure that what you share does not trigger the other person a stress behavior and a flight or freeze response. How about having a conversation with your employees about how they wish they receive feedback and what triggers them? This is one useful way to give feedback in a way that is useful for the other person.
Bottom line:
It is not easy to focus on people when the focus is on business. Sometimes doing both does not work as expected. Creating small habits that take care of the relationship between leader and employee is the key to success and retaining the people longer in the company. So why not try out these small ideas?
