I met a lot of people for whom it’s easy to set a goal and go towards it.
For me, it was hard to do so without some clarifying questions so that I am able to clearly articulate what exactly I want, how I know I arrived there, and which resources I need for it.
In the book “Time Line Therapy And The Basis Of Personality” by T. James and W. Woodsmall I found the exact key questions that are helping me in this regard and today I want to share them with you.
They can be used for your own needs, in a feedback or coaching conversation, they can be used in a Design Sprint as well to guide the team to set a 2-year goal and the options are infinite.
The 6 key questions that help you clarify what you want
"What specifically do I want?"
"Where am I now?"
"What will I see, hear, feel when I have it?" (make it compelling)
"How will I know when I have it?"
"What will this outcome get for me or allow me to do?"
"What resources do I have now, and what resources do I need to get my outcome?"
"For what purpose do I want this? What will I gain/lose if I have it?"
“What will happen if I get it?”
“What won’t happen if I get it?”
“What will happen if I don’t get it?”
“What won’t happen if I don’t get it?”
Visualization created with Drawify. I choose a circle because I do think its an iterative process and for me it is useful when I revisit it during my journey to the goal.
Bottom lines:
For some people, it works better to set up the direction with these questions, either in private life, in work setting goals, or in any other areas. Try it out and let me know how it goes for you!
