Let’s suppose you want to generate ideas and solutions for a topic alone or with your team.
You take time for this, you have the space for it, and now what?
What can be the biggest enemy of not being able to do this?
FEAR - Why is FEAR the enemy of creativity?
Human brains ask continuously when receiving outside or inside information: “Am I safe?”. If the answer is NO, fear appears, and we have an “away” reaction, considering that information/event a threat.
In this state of mind (and body) your brain is busy working out how to get rid of the threat. There is no headspace to have cognitive performance and enter in a creativity flow.
What are the work situations that can generate flight or fight behavior?
Triggers of the flight or fight behavior in working environments - as per the study of Daniel Goleman, author of the book “The Brain and Emotional Intelligence” are:
The impression you are not listened to or heard
Being unappreciated
Lack of respect
Being treated unfairly
Someone else taking credit for your work
Of course, there are many more, and depending on what you are sensitive to this can differ
Bottom lines:
When certain events trigger in us a flight or fight response, fear approaches us, stress comes in and our brain is busy reacting to this rather than being able to go into the creative flow.
Taking care of our emotional state, connecting to ourselves, getting grounded, and connecting to others are the key factors in any moment, but especially before a creative session.
