10 Years Ago I would Have Quit My Job In A Similar Situation
How I used neuroscience to regulate my emotions and understand other person's perspective
I had recently a situation where my body was saying a big “NO” to what was happening.
It was a situation that made my heart bit raising a lot.
My mind was on repeat: “It’s not fair!”
I even said, once (only) that it is not fair. And when I said it, I realized that I need to regulate my emotions. It was one of those moments when you know you need to do something fast to control your emotions.
And no, I did not have much time to do so. As I was in a discussion with another person.
So I took 3 deep breaths and I was becoming aware of what happens in my body and mind.
I immediately started to ask questions, to understand the other person's perspective. I transformed my angry moment into one full of curiosity.
Why?
Because only like this I could come together with him to a common understanding.
No, it was not perfect. But much better than I would have done it 10 years ago. At that time, I did not know how to be aware of what happening inside myself and what to do about it. I also did not know how to identify that the person I am having a discussion with also goes through such a moment.
Back then I would have quit my job. Fast. Just because I thought is not fair.
Without even being willing to understand other perspectives.
In this specific case that recently happened, it was a situation both the other person and myself felt was unfair. And we were both highly emotionally hijacked.
We survived.
Because I was able to regulate fast my emotions, while still expressing my opinion. And because the other person knew how to be empathic and listen to me.
